Your journey begins at the lake port in Ksamil, where you’ll meet your local guide and
captain. You’ll board a traditional-style mussel boat—his pride and joy—and set off
across
the calm, protected waters of Lake Butrint.
As you cruise, your guide explains in perfect English how mussels are grown and
harvested in
this unique ecosystem. The lake is rich with birds and fish, and the scenery is
untouched—featuring only local fishermen using handlines and small mussel shacks along
the
shoreline.
Hands-On Mussel Experience
This is more than a tour—it’s a real experience.
You will:
- Learn how mussels are grown and harvested.
- Take part in cleaning the mussels.
- Discover how to remove the “beard” from each shell.

Guest Experience
We met our guide at Lake Port in Ksamil and climbed aboard his traditional mussel boat. He explained everything in perfect English as we crossed Lake Butrint. The scenery was beautiful and untouched, with birds, fish, and local fishermen along the shore. We helped clean the mussels and learned how to prepare them.
On arrival, locals welcomed us with a table set in the shade. The food was incredible—fresh mussels, wine, and local dishes. The atmosphere was peaceful, with only nature around us. The return at sunset was breathtaking. It was a perfect afternoon—unique, authentic, and great value for money. Not typical tourism at all. Highly recommended.
